FedEx Express has recently opened two new facilities, one being in Mexico and the other in Japan. The new hub within Mexico is said to be the midpoint for FedEx and their domestic operations, while the new hub located in Japan will act as a merger for shipments travelling between the US and Asia.

In Mexico, FedEx has situated a new hub facility in Cuatitlan Izcalli. With operation having commenced already, the new 65,000 square metre build is expected to sort up to 13,500 packages per hour. The newly placed hub is also set to reduce transit times, improve collection times and ultimately able deliveries to be carried out more efficiently throughout the country.

The new Mexican hub has around 800 employees based there, including 53 platforms from which loading and unloading can be carried out. Shipments travelling on the company’s services will pass through this hub before reaching their end destination.

COO and President, Michael L. Ducker, for FedEx Express has said: “FedEx sees the potential that Mexico offers for our business and has invested nearly $160 million since 2011. If Mexican businesses increase their competitiveness and reach more markets, FedEx and its employees will benefit.” Ducker also described it as a “win-win scenario” and that the company will “continue to work and invest to accelerate trade in Mexico.

FedEx said its new facility in the State of Mexico is a “major commitment” in helping improve the economy growth within developing regions of the country, such as Guanajuato and Queretaro.

Japan’s new facility will exceed Mexico’s new build in terms of area by covering 39,500 square metres. Based at Kansai International Airport, the new hub is anticipated to sort up to 9,000 packages per hour. The facility will include advanced features such as an in-house customs unit, cargo sorting and temperature control systems, which will prove particularly beneficial for healthcare shipments.

While the hub will continue to serve in the handling of international cargo shipments for the Western region, it will also help in developing links to other countries. FedEx are to add an additional flight to Indianapolis within the USA.

President David L. Cunningham has said: “Our North Pacific Regional Hub not only provides us with greater operational flexibility, but also allows us to offer our customers in Japan and the Asia Pacific access to regional and global trade opportunities through our strong operational network.”
