ClassNK is due to take part in a joint project with Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, and MES Technoservice Co. Ltd.

The Japanese classification society, ClassNK, will support the research into the development of condition-based engine motoring systems for the Mitsui MAN B&W engine, which will be used to assist in detecting abnormalities in electronically-controlled diesel engines used in ships.

The joint partnership is in the bid to discover ways to reduce workloads by introducing a system that can automatically recognise and analyse the electronically-controlled engine’s sensor data. The companies are hoping this will prevent system failures and increase the consistency of overhaul intervals. The new system is expected to provide safe operation of the ship and reduce life cycle costs.

ClassNK has reportedly said it will use the outcome of this planned joint research to improve its service systems further.
