DHL Express has moved forward in constructing its new 67 million Euro gateway facility at Shinkiba within the Koto area of Tokyo, Japan. The newly built 15,000 square metre hub will act as the parcel delivery company’s fourth gateway in Japan, in addition to being its largest gateway in the world.

DHL is expecting completion to be within the first quarter of 2016 with the ability to sort through 12,000 shipments per hour and handle the highest volumes seen at any DHL gateway worldwide.

The new facility will have access to major links, such as Nirita International Airport and Haneda Airport, as well as important Tokyo business districts. The newly built hub will also follow the same strategic operations as the already existing DHL Tokyo Distribution Centre, whilst also doubling in floor space with the intention to boat customs clearance abilities.

Chief Executive at DHL Express Asia Pacific, Jerry Hsu, has commented: “In tandem with the country’s remarkable economic recovery, this investment will provide DHL sufficient capacity to accommodate current and future growth.” Hsu also added: “DHL is well positioned to continue helping customers capitalise on industry expansion, as well as to facilitate Japan’s position as a global economic powerhouse and integral trading partner to the rest of the world.”
