DHL Express is currently testing the use of bicycles for the express delivery of small parcels and documents within Germany for the first time. The parcel delivery giant has introduced the use of bicycle couriers within nine European countries so far, including France, Italy, Britain and the Netherlands.

It has been reported that the piloting of this service has been successful, with DHL now testing the use of bicycles in Berlin and Frankfurt.

DHL is to test two models of bicycles. One of the models, known as a DHL Paracycle, features a 140-litre container to hold shipments, while the second model is based around the structure of a normal bicycle, known as a DHL Touring Bike and features a courier backpack.

DHL Express Divisional Board member, Tobias Wider, has said the bicycles will make deliveries “significantly more flexible” and faster in busy, downtown areas. Wider commented: “Unlike delivery vehicle drivers, bicycle couriers can always drive right up to the recipient’s door, are not affected by downtown traffic volumes or access restrictions, and at times can even use shorter routes.”

Bicycle transport is due to help DHL meet the high demands for more efficient and environmentally friendly shipping. Wider also said: “Our aim is to utilise bicycle couriers in the next few years anywhere they can improve our customer service and effectiveness.”
