DHL has revealed its plans to improve Berlin’s parcel options. The parcel delivery company has claimed its “densest network of alternative delivery options in Germany…will be found in Berlin” by the end of 2016.

DHL plans include expanding its current base of 180 units to 500, increasing its capacity to process up to 50,000 parcels per day. It also expects to introduce thousands of parcel box units in apartment buildings, specifically “across the entire urban region of Berlin.

Residents of Berlin currently travel an average of 360 metres to reach their closest DHL Parcel Shop, however in the future DHL are to locate these shops in places where customers can both send and pick up their parcels and packages.

Other plans for the parcel delivery company involve introducing additional time windows for parcel deliveries and its own smartphone app.

Jürgen Gerdes, Board Member for Post - eCommerce - Parcel at Deutsche Post DHL Group has said: “In the mid-term, thanks for these measures, we will be in a position to process more than half of all shipments in Berlin using these innovative delivery concepts and thus o offer parcel recipients I Berlin a one-of-a-kind service.”
