The UK's Heathrow Airport has announced that it is preparing to “transform cargo” by improving airport operations for shippers and freight forwarders.

The news follows complaints of congestion from forwarders and shippers, who have faced added costs as a result of long delays. The main culprit is the so-called “horseshoe” freight area, where cargo is collected. The congestion has put a strain on the airport’s import handling sheds.

The blame has also been levelled at a reduction in space due to SEGRO’s rebuilding of a parking area. In addition, CHIEF, the system that processes imports and exports at UK Customs, failed last week, causing more backlogs and longer waiting times.

Heathrow Airport is now looking to improve cargo, mainly by alleviating the horseshoe bottleneck.
