Frederick W. Smith, the founder of FedEx, has said at a Memphis logistics conference that he does not see drones or driverless trucks delivering packages in the near future.
Smith cites the potential lethality of drones and the risk of losing control over them that, while increasingly uncommon, still poses dangers. Driverless trucks, he says, also face the challenges of collision avoidance technology.
However, Smith believes that autopilot systems could make the roads safer and the job of truck driving less stressful by aiding human drivers, which would help with the current truck driver shortage by making the job more appealing.
