The two main types of freight forwarders according to area of operation

Freight forwarders

Freight forwarders have to work in co-operation with other courier officials for the smooth shipment of goods. Most freight forwarders maintain good relations with other freight forwarders from different countries. This helps them to expand their network. Based on their work, freight forwarders are classified as either domestic freight forwarders or international freight forwarders.

Domestic freight forwarders

Domestic freight forwarders work in only one given country. They look after the shipments of goods and also see to it that any custom laws or other regulations are not violated. They also arrange for all the necessary papers and documents required to send goods to different places. They also have to look after quick and safe transportation of goods.

International freight forwarders

International freight forwarders have to ensure strict compliance with laws and regulations of different countries. They work as third party negotiators who have the knowledge of all transport norms and standards in the local regions. They also have to arrange for all necessary documents required for import and export of goods. International freight forwarders need to obtain a license from the authority bodies before they carry out any work.

International air freight forwarders have to comply with all rules stated by the international air transport association (IATA). They have to be in contact with overseas custom officials to verify all documents.

Freight forwarders are required by most traders and businesses. It is for the trader to decide on which freight forwarder to go with.
