Helpful hints when shipping goods

Shipping is a fairly easy matter if done correctly. You can either do it yourself or you can leave it to the professionals.

Have international shipping rules covered

Shipping costs are worked out on three factors; dimensions of package, weight and the parcel destination. Always remember that when you ship something, you are actually paying for the space in the aircraft. Also keep in mind that certain shipments are not allowed in certain countries.

Pick the right box

Use a sturdy box to protect the contents and make sure there is a lot of space for cushioning. If you are using a used box, make sure that you tear off any old shipping labels. The box should be in good shape, and should not have any cracks or weak areas. Thin walled boxes or shoe boxes should never be used.

The most important aspect of shipping: The cushioning

Be generous with the cushioning material. Material that classifies as good cushioning includes newspapers, bubblewrap and Styrofoam. Make the bubblewrap go around the item at least thrice, and stuff crumpled newspaper and Styrofoam in every nook and cranny between the object and the box.

If you’re shipping multiple items, make sure that you wrap them separately and make sure that they are nestled snugly against each other. Be extra generous with the cushioning on fragile items like glass.

Stick a return address label on the inside as well as on the outside of the box. Before you send your shipment give it a good shake to make sure that nothing is rattling around.
