Hamburg Airport has begun works on the building of its new Hamburg Airport Cargo Centre (HACC). Due to begin servicing mid-2015, the HACC will provide efficient and modernised systems in regards to freight handling, with the size of the building being of similar to that of the airport itself.

The design of the new building will be made sure to keep in line with the needs of the freight forwarding companies that exist there currently.

The HACC will provide cargo handling halls and offices, with a capacity of up to 150,000 tonnes. The build will see 6,000 square metres occupied by offices, and a further 20,000 square metres will aid in housing logistic operations. In addition there will be 40 loading ramps for articulated trucks, as well as approximately 36 parking positions for tractor-trailer combinations.

Due to time-sensitive shipments acting as the majority of shipments that are handled at Hamburg Airport, the new cargo halls will have a layout which will provide an improved speed of the transhipment of freight.

Chief Executive of the airport, Michael Eggenschwiler, has said: “We are investing around 45 million Euros from our own funds in the modern air freight facilities. The money is a good investment for the site and the region.”
