Politicians within the UK have asked London Mayor, Boris Johnson, to review the impact of competition on Royal Mail’s service. This comes after the London Assembly voted for Johnson to review TNT Post UK’s end-to-end postal service.

TNT has been the first company to provide a major alternative to Royal Mail’s services in recent months, with its services in West London starting during April 2012. The service has since expanded to parts of Central London, North West and South West London, Manchester and Liverpool.

It has been reported that TNT Post has a strategy, by which it determines which are the most profitable areas in which to deliver post. The strategy is suggested to “damage” Royal Mail’s ability to provide its “one-price-goes-everywhere” universal postal service.

It has been demanded that the London Mayor carries out a review to establish what changes are needed to be made in order to protect the universal postal service’s future. Mayor Johnson has also been asked to lobby the government to re-nationalise Royal Mail.
