The year’s first six months has witnessed airports in central Germany experience positive growth and development. Airports Leipzig/Halle Airport and Dresden Airport, both operated by Mitteldeutsche Flughafen, handled 44,430 aircraft movements during the first six months of 2014, this being 4.1% more than the same time period of the previous year.

June in particular saw growth for both airports, with Leipzig/Hall Airport achieving 6% more than compared to June of 2013. January to June saw freight volumes at Leipzig/Halle grow with 442,109 tonnes handled – a slight growth rate of 0.9%. Additionally, reports show aircraft movements rose by 5.5% to 30,552 during the first half of the year.

Chief Executive Officer at Mittledeutsche Flughafen, Markus Kopp, has said: “In the freight sector, Leipzig/Halle Airport has continued to consolidate its position as Germany’s second largest cargo hub. Freight volumes are growing for the tenth year in succession, and underlines the airport’s position as one of the most important air freight handling centres in Europe.”
