TNT Express is currently building its largest hub facility within its network near to Melbourne Airport, Australia. The new ‘super-hub’, which is currently under construction, is said to be 38,000 square metres in size, with the new facility covering nearly a third of the 121,000 square metre site it is being built on. Due for completion in July 2015, the hub is due to act as the parcel delivery company’s head office within the state of Victoria, as well as providing hub space for Tasmania.

The new hub will be equipped with modern sorting technology, giving it the ability to process up to 18,500 parcels per hour – a 60% improvement on TNT’s current capacity in its Melbourne hub.

TNT Regional Director, Rod Barnes, has commented: “With continued growth in demand we knew we wouldn’t be able to maintain the high level of service our customers expect without making this investment.” Barnes also added: “This brought about a step-change in thinking about how a facility should be set up to serve our customers’ changing needs, brought about by the growth in e-commerce and a shift to light weight, higher volume consignments.” The Regional Director also advised the new facility will meet TNT’s needs for “at least the next 15 years.”

Barnes also commented boosting its network capacity will allow TNT to provide improved domestic and global express freight services in growth sectors like healthcare, high value manufacturing, IT and technology.
