UPS is anticipating an 11% increase in parcel volumes during this year’s holiday period. In the bid to control its performance during the busy time, the US parcel delivery giant is due to employ between 90,000 and 95,000 temporary members of staff to help in coping with the extra volume. UPS is expecting to process and handle more than 585 million parcels and packages during the month of December as a result of the increase in online shopping.

The parcel delivery company is expecting its busiest day to be Monday 22nd December and it anticipating the delivery of 34 million shipments worldwide, this being double the average volume it experiences on a normal working day.

The company has prepared for the forthcoming holiday season by already introducing or improving upon 47 of its facilities to improve the flexibility of its network.

UPS Chief Commercial Officer, Alan Gersehnhorn, has said: “The holiday season is a major retail sales opportunity for our customers, and we have worked closely with many of our shippers to plan delivery volumes. Our objective is to ensure that all of our year-round business and retail shippers can take maximum advantage of expanded UPS capacity during this important period.”
