DHL’s largest facility within Leipzig, Germany continues to grow following its first construction phase. The DHL European Hub has recently seen completion with the first shipment sorting operations now being ready. The overall expansion has seen the hub increase in capacity by 50% meaning more than 150,000 shipments are sorted per hour. Half of the 400 new jobs that have been created have already been filled, with over 3,800 people being employed at the hub currently.

Managing Director of DHL Hub Leipzig GmbH, Ralph Wondrak, has said: “DHL has delivered on the promise we made when we moved to Leipzig. This investment will allow us to create ideal operational conditions for future growth. We take our responsibility as an investor and employer in the region very seriously.”

The expansion will see the hub double in current footprint size, allowing for more efficient shipment handling and sorting processes. DHL has also had a material handling system installed, along with a parking yard and increased office space.

“The expansion enables us to increase the efficiency of our flight operations,” explains Markus Otto, Marketing Director for European Air Transport Leipzig GmbH. Otto continued: “With this, our aircraft load factors can be increased and quicker turnaround can be achieved for each flight at the hub.”
