The International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s head of cargo Glyn Hughes, speaking last week at the FIATA World Congress in Taipei, warned of the growing threat of lithium batteries that are being sold through e-commerce and shipped via air freight.

Hughes called for vigilance, warning against the wilful neglect of regulations and the shippers who deliberately attempt to circumvent them. There has been an influx of this due to the proliferation of consumer-to-consumer exchanges online.

IATA will be working with the World Customs Organization and the Universal Postal Union to create an awareness campaign.
