FedEx has partnered with the Osterhout Design Group (ODG) to launch the prototype of a new oxygen mask with an augmented reality heads-up display (HUD) to aid pilots during emergencies.
The Smoke Assured Vision Enhanced Display (SAVED) is designed for situations where a pilot’s view is obscured when the cockpit is compromised due to fire, smoke or fumes.

SAVED connects to the plane’s HUD computer and to cameras attached to the outside of the aircraft to allow the pilot to see the flight controls and upcoming terrain or runways. As it’s also an oxygen mask, it’s a quick and efficient solution for cockpit emergencies.
It builds on ODG’s existing R-7 model of smartglasses which are designed for industrial use. The company’s product line also includes the lightweight R-8 model for business wear and the R-9 model with wide field-of-vision for gaming, entertainment and design work.
The SAVED prototype will be showcased at IATA’s Safety and Flight Ops Conference on April 17th-19th.
