Sending a parcel via DHL? New packing requirements were introduced for DHL on 1st June 2018.

There aren’t too many differences from the general packing advice that applies for all of our couriers (still worth reading for some hot tips!), but with DHL's new guidelines it’s all about the details.

Please be aware that DHL drivers may refuse to collect your parcel if they deem it inadequately packaged.

Sending a box

According to DHL’s new guidelines, boxes are suitable for lighter goods weighing up to 30kg. However, caution should be taken over long and narrow boxes that are structurally weak and may need reinforcing.

You should use double-walled cardboard boxes and make sure there’s a distance of at least 6cm between the contents and the walls of the box. Fill all void space with cushioning material.

Boxes can weigh up to 30kg with DHL

Use pressure-sensitive tape with a minimum width of 28mm to seal the box. Use an H-taping method, which means taping both ends of the box as well as where the flaps meet in the middle. Seal all edges and seams.

Apply any labels to the top face of your package. This must be a single surface.

Sending a crate or pallet

You must use crates or pallets for goods heavier than 30kg. Use quality hard wood for crates and brace them diagonally to increase the strength of the crate. The wood must be heat or chemically treated prior to use.

Items on a pallet must be secured in place with a level and even surface on top. Boxes should not overhang the pallet’s edge.
