Construction has begun on the new DHL Campus Vienna Airport in Fischamend, Austria, which will serve as a central logistics centre in Austria and a gateway to Eastern Europe.

Executives from DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Freight joined the Mayor of Fischamend and a representative from Vienna airport operator Flughafen Wien AG attended a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony last week to signal the start of construction work.

DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Freight will have a freight terminal and an office building each, encompassing 12,000 square metres of warehouse space and 3,500 square metres of office space overall.

The new buildings will boast state-of-the-art security and environmental protection measures, using renewable energies.

“With the DHL Campus Vienna Airport we are further expanding our leading market position in Austria,” said Christoph Wahl, managing director of DHL Global Forwarding in Austria.

“This modern logistics hub, which meets the highest safety and quality standards, will enable us not only to handle a higher volume of freight for our customers, for instance in the Life Sciences & Healthcare industry, but also to provide an even better service. The direct proximity to the airport will reduce turnaround times and create valuable synergies with our colleagues in road transport.”

Horst Sorg, managing director of DHL Freight in Austria, said that innovations for freight such as “digital yard management” would be implemented at the site.

The site is due for completion at the start of 2019.
