Starship Technologies has launched the UK’s first autonomous robot parcel delivery service in Milton Keynes. The service is available through a smartphone app.

Milton Keynes residents can have packages delivered to their door at the exact time of their choosing. When they sign up on the app, they’ll be given the address of a local Starship facility and sent a notification when their parcel has been delivered to the facility. They can then choose when and where they would like one of Starship’s parcel delivery robots to deliver the parcel to them.

“We’re excited that thanks to our technology, local communities across Milton Keynes will never miss a home delivery again,” said Starship CEO Lex Bayer. “Today more than ever, people lead busy and diverse lives. The hassle of needing to re-arrange your life for a delivery will become a thing of the past.”

According to the Starship website, the robots can deliver parcels within a 2-mile radius of their facilities, taking 5-30 minutes in a journey that can be monitored via the app.

The robots move at pedestrian speed and their cargo bay can only be unlocked by the recipient. The website describes the robots as “incredibly clean and incredibly green” due to minimal emissions and energy efficiency.

Starship was founded in 2014 by two Skype co-founders, Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis.
