DHL announced a new global partnership with the FIE Formula E Championship earlier this week. The new championship – which begins in September 2014 – is the world’s first fully-electric car racing series and will feature single-seater open-wheel cars powered exclusively by electricity. DHL will be responsible for ensuring the safe and timely delivery of all racing cars, spare parts and lithium-ion batteries to ten race locations worldwide.

CEO of DHL Express Keith Allen highlighted that the environmentally conscious aspect of the championship was just as important as the speed and excitement associated with motor racing: “The FIA Formula E Championship is much more than just another motorsports series…It provides a global platform for promoting sustainability and the future of mobility, addressing one of the world’s most pressing challenges,” he said.

The importance of the green agenda will therefore also play a part in DHL’s logistics services. According to the company, in delivering the vehicles and associated equipment, their service offer will comprise “the most efficient and green technology and processes available today.”

Alejandro Agag, CEO of Championship promoters Formula E Holdings, commented: : “The logistics side of our Championship presents a great opportunity to showcase how to transport 40 cars and all associated elements while minimizing the carbon footprint of the operation. The strategy is not just offsetting, First, we will look at minimizing the emissions, and whatever is left, we will offset in order to be a carbon neutral Championship.”
