DNV-GL has recently submitted a report that shows shipping companies are not applying the tools that are readily at their disposal to decrease energy consumption. The report has shown that some companies have made initial savings; however only a few have continued to succeed in obtaining savings above 10 %. Industry leaders have claimed 10% or more in fuel savings, but it remains that significant potential in this area remain untouched.

Those who have not invested in effective ship designs or efficient operations will be expected to increase their efforts to reduce fuel consumption.

The shipping industry has focused its attention to introducing practices that involve minimal investment, such as slow steaming, optimised voyage planning and specified weather routing.

Shipping companies are heading towards greater energy efficiency, with the introduction of smart performance management solutions to proactively enhance ship performance immediately.
