Express parcels industry feeling the pressure

Major market changes wrought by disruptive technology, online commerce and broader economic upheavals have driven up the pressure on the express parcels industry to unprecedented levels, according to Transport Intelligence, a UK logistics consultancy.

As such, the industry has been forced to develop more sophisticated delivery strategies to meet the requirements of its customers.

One difficulty, says the report, has been the need to square the impracticality and costliness of home deliveries with customers’ expectation of choosing the time and place of their delivery. This has led to the use of smart lockers, service stations, supermarkets and railway stations as alternative delivery locations.

The industry continues to struggle with demand during peak times of year, as well as facing growing competition from start-ups.
