Heathrow Airport has announced plans to double its capacity for air freight, by expanding and improving its infrastructure.

The aim is to halve the airport’s air freight processing time from its current eight or nine to approximately four. Heathrow also wants to build a specialist pharmaceutical storage area, for temperature-sensitive goods.

The plan will require an investment of around £180 million. The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed the news, viewing it as Heathrow’s recognition of the importance of air freight to the UK economy.
