Amazon is seeking up to 25 aircraft to run its own cargo fleet. Several air companies have been approached to lease the aircraft from, including Atlas Air Inc and Air Transport Services Group Inc.
This follows speculation about Amazon’s intentions after it had begun Boeing 767 test flights out of Wilmington Air Park, Ohio, using ATSG.
The most likely goal would be to reduce its reliance on traditional carriers such as UPS, who have struggled to cope with seasonal demand in past years, helping Amazon to avoid delays and keep costs down.
