TNT Express is to install new and advanced technologies throughout its fleet of vehicles, in the bid to improve on fuel efficiency, the safety of its drivers and the overall performance of its delivery network.

The UK business to business delivery company are to introduce the use of an in-cab black box camera system to 500 of its vehicles, after a test of the new system has proven to be successful.

The new feature, named the Roadhawk Black Box Vehicle Camera System, will be present within TNT Express’ vehicles, having been designed to capture data with the idea of being able to analyse this at a later date.

TNT Express has already trialled the new system over the past nine months by having the new system installed in vehicles reporting to and from their Rotherham depot. The trail reported that 56% of drivers felt their driving behaviours had changed due to the presence of the camera in their vehicle, with 75% advising they felt their personal safety was heightened.

Managing Director of TNT Express UK and Ireland has said: “Any technology which helps us optimise the efficiency with which we transport consignments around our network in order to meet customers’ deadlines, and further improves the fuel efficiency of our vehicles while doing so, can only bring benefits to the businesses we serve.”

The new technology incudes the installation of a wide angled lens CCTV camera which is placed in the front window screen of the vehicle itself. The camera films the road ahead, and should an incident occur, the camera is able to capture the footage on an installed memory card. Certain information is able to be pulled from the memory card, including the GSP coordinates to identify the vehicles location, providing links to Google Maps, as well as speed and G-force.

Managing Director for Roadhawk, Mark Nelson, has described the cameras as being “discreet recording systems” that are “easily fitted to sit behind the vehicle’s rear-view mirror.” Nelson also says that “once the installed, automatic recording begins when the vehicle is started.”
