Royal Mail has recently employed Richard Hooper to help persuade Ofcom to take actions over the recent activities of postal delivery rival, TNT Post UK. Hooper chaired the independent review of the UK postal network in 2008 and 2010.

Hooper has now been asked by Royal Mail to assist in helping convince the postal regulator, Ofcom, to bring forward the review of the activities of TNT Post UK. TNT Post has been in constant competition with Royal Mail since 2012, with Royal Mail accusing TNT Post UK of “cherry picking.”

Royal Mail has been actively campaigning to have TNT Post UK given stricter mail service standards, or to be forced to contribute towards the economics of universal service. Ofcom has so far reported it does not yet see any evidence to suggest Royal Mail’s services are to be affected or threatened.

Hooper has commented on his appointment by saying: “I look forward to working with Royal Mail to encourage Ofcom to bring forward its review as soon as possible so that the threat to the universal postal service can be independently assessed and solutions found where necessary.”
