As haulage prices rise due to the refugee crisis in Europe, shippers are opting for air freight as a more efficient alternative. Countries afflicted include Hungary, Germany, Austria, Serbia and Croatia.

The cost of logistics has been pushed up by delays and extra waiting times due to closed or restricted borders in the Schengen Area (the 26 European countries that don’t require passport control at their common borders) and problems at the Channel Tunnel between Calais and Dover, including the ferry workers’ strike. While the Calais situation has improved, delays continue to afflict the crossing.

In an attempt to reduce the costs incurred by these delays, carriers are using additional aircraft to alleviate supply chain disruption and ensure that cargo is delivered on time.
