FedEx reduces fuel bill with new fuselage cleaning procedure

FedEx’s new fuselage cleaning procedure will reduce its fuel bill, according to the company. It has adopted the new cleaning process for 13 of its aircraft serving Europe from the Roissy-Charles De Gaulle hub in France.

The procedure involves using brooms equipped with microfibre rags and a cleaning product that is anti-static, biodegradable, non-flammable and non-toxic. By leaving the surface of the aircraft smoother, according to FedEx's theory, the aircraft become more aerodynamic and require less fuel.

In addition, cleaning and maintenance can be performed at the same time, as the process does not spray water onto the tarmac. This means that the planes don’t have to be moved to a separate area for cleaning, shortening out-of-service times.
