DPD has released aerial footage of its new £150 million super hub, which is under construction in Hinckley, Leicestershire.

The 276,454 square foot facility will be the fifth DPD hub in the UK and the largest domestic parcel hub in Europe. The main building will measure 502 by 40 metres, and is to be kitted out with fully automated sortation technology and optical recognition software for parcel scanning.

Construction on the hub began in January and the main building is scheduled for completion in February 2020. The engineering fit-out, according to DPD, will take until December 2021, with the facility finally operational the following year.

It’s located near two other important DPD facilities: Hub 4 and the International Gateway in Sketchley.

Following completion, the hub will be able to sort through an estimated 72,000 parcels an hour.

Dwain McDonald, CEO of DPD, said: “It is fantastic to see our fifth hub starting to take shape. Hinckley is already a strategically key location for us but having two giant hubs there in the future, separate from our West Midlands hubs, gives us a huge amount of operational flexibility to cope with major volume peaks or traffic issues on the network.”
