FedEx has moved its Toulouse-Blagnac Airport operations in France to a new eco-conscious facility in nearby Colomiers.

The facility has been certified with a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating—a measure of its energy usage, sustainability and environmental factors—of ‘Good’.

It achieves this by using sustainable building materials, intelligent lighting, controlled water consumption and 330 square metres of solar panels, readying it for use by electric vehicles.

The facility was designed in collaboration with a specialist ecologist to emphasise coexistence with the ecosystem of the land.

For example, hedgehog shelters, beehives, bird nesting boxes, bat shelters and ‘hotels’ for insects and lizards have all been incorporated into the design.

The company will also be reintroducing vegetation and preserving some of the woodland in the area. International and domestic parcels will be sorted in the facility, consolidating operations relating to line-haul, sorting, pick-ups and deliveries.
