FedEx is expanding the use of e-carts in a pilot programme in New York City, as part of efforts to decarbonise last-mile delivery.

The e-carts, created by tech start-up BrightDrop, are electronically propelled, allowing couriers to pull heavy loads with ease.

In that sense, the principle is the same as e-bikes—the carts are not automated, but the effort required to use them is greatly reduced.

FedEx’s e-carts are loaded at the FedEx station, then dropped off with foot couriers who offload them from vehicles. After making their deliveries, they then load up the empties and head back to the station.

The carts will speed up to 3mph to match the courier’s walking pace. They are also designed for easy manoeuvrability.

The idea is that the use of e-carts will reduce the number of idling vehicles and curbside delivery activity, which is vital for easing congestion in busy urban centres. In trials so far it has also increased the number of stops made per hour.

The trial is taking place in five locations across New York City: the Diamond District, Theatre District, Midtown, Midtown East and Brooklyn Heights. The programme began in the Diamond District last year.
