Following the news that Amazon look to be setting up their own air freight operation in Ohio, U.S.A., it was revealed just before Christmas that they have also been carrying out secret flights to and from the UK.

As of December 24th, a Boeing 737 had made five trips a week during a six-week period, flying to the UK from Katowice, Poland, and back again via Kassel, Germany.

Katowice is near to Amazon’s two giant warehouses in Wroclaw (covering 190,000 square metres between them), while Kassel is the closest airport to Amazon fulfilment centres in Bad Hersfeld. In the UK, Amazon used Luton, East Midlands and Doncaster airports.

The plane was chartered from German logistics firm DB Schenker. According to the Evening Standard, Amazon are looking to extend the trials to Spain and Italy.
