Royal Mail staff have been warned that there may be a 50% jump in parcel volume today due to “take back Tuesday”, the day when customers return their unwanted Christmas presents following the bank holiday weekend.

Royal Mail arrived at this figure by looking at the number of returns logged by online retailers, which typically allow customers to return any unwanted items—a practise that has become increasingly common in recent years thanks to e-commerce.

There will also be additional parcel volume due to people re-selling their gifts on sites like eBay. eBay has pegged the number of unwanted gifts at an estimated 115 million, or £2.2 billion in value, each year.

Women’s clothing and footwear are among the most frequently returned items, according to Royal Mail.
