Richard W. Smith is set to take over as CEO of FedEx Express from September, succeeding Donald F. Colleran, who is retiring after almost forty years at the company.

Richard Smith is the son of Fred Smith, CEO and founder of FedEx. He is currently regional president of the Americas, and executive vice president of global support for the Express division.

Smith will become CEO-elect from next month before taking on full duties in the autumn.

Raj Subramaniam, COO of FedEx, is still seen as Fred Smith’s most likely successor when the founder retires after more than 50 years at the helm of the company.

Founded in 1971, FedEx is now the world’s largest transportation and logistics company.

FedEx Express accounts for more than 50% of its sales, as of the last full fiscal year.
