Fast food chain KFC has temporarily closed hundreds of its UK stores due to a shortage of chicken. The cause? A switch to a new delivery contractor, DHL.

“The chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants,” joked the KFC website. “We’ve brought a new delivery partner onboard, but they’ve had a couple of teething problems – getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex!”

According to the KFC website, around 270 of their 900 restaurants remained open as of Sunday night. Some are operating limited hours, while others have fewer items on the menu.

“Due to operational issues a number of deliveries in recent days have been incomplete or delayed,” DHL explained.

The courier company said it was working “to rectify the situation as a priority and [we] apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
