DHL is the new title sponsor for the worldwide DR1 drone racing series—or, as it’s now officially named, ‘DR1 presents the DHL Champions Series fueled by Mountain Dew’.

Drone racing is a new sport in which pilots race drones by remote control, using FPV (first-person view) goggles that livestream from the drone's cameras.

For this series, race locations will include the Post Tower in Bonn, Germany, which is the headquarters of Deutsche Post DHL Group. Other races will take place in the United States and Ireland.

The championship will be broadcast online and on TV, by Eurosport, Fox Sports Asia and Twitch.TV.

It’s a good match for DHL, as the company is currently looking into drone technology for logistics purposes. DHL has been testing its Parcelcopter for over four years, deploying it for fully automated deliveries in remote and difficult-to-reach locations.

Drones have also been used for security monitoring at DHL Supply Chain sites in Brazil and Mexico.

In a similar vein, DHL was logistics partner for the recent FIA Formula E Championship, demonstrating its interest in electric vehicles, which it hopes to use to lower its global carbon emissions.
