UPS is expecting record-breaking parcel returns volume this holiday season, both before and after Christmas.
The courier company has predicted that on January 2nd, which it has dubbed National Returns Day, 1.9 million returns will make their way through the UPS network—a year-on-year increase of 26%.
UPS also expects at least 1 million return parcels a day in December, ramping up to 1.6 million a day in the week beginning December 16th. The company attributes these high volumes to early Christmas shopping due to retailer promotions, such as Black Friday on November 29th and Cyber Monday on December 2nd.
“As retailers start preparing for the busy holiday season, they should certainly be factoring returns into their business plans,” said UPS’ chief marketing officer, Kevin Warren.
“Gone are the days where returns were isolated to January – today’s empowered customers will be sending packagers back to retailers all season long.”
